A computer virus is a malicious program that can be created by people who wish to cause harm or disruption to systems and computers. They are coded bits which are linked to different programs or applications and once activated, they spread like wildfire. Viruses are typically found in documents or programs that have been downloaded from the internet or transmitted via email. The majority of countries think that creating and spreading computer viruses is a crime.
There are many different types of computer viruses that are able to be able to infect computers in various ways. Certain computer viruses rely on an application to start their work. Others are not dependent and can attack multiple systems without a host. Computer viruses that utilize host programs to infect computers are commonly known as worms but those that do not employ this method of infection by using other programs are known as viruses.
Certain viruses can begin infecting the system as soon as they arrive, whereas other remain undetected until the user accidentally executes the code. The first computer virus was discovered in 1974, and it acted much like a biological virus by multiplying itself rapidly and damaging the system. Stuxnet is an example of an extremely destructive computer virus. It was created to destroy computerized centrifuges which were used to enrich uranium.
