When selecting an antivirus program it is important to know how much of your computer’s resources the software will use. The most effective software will have very little impact on your system’s performance but still offer excellent protection against viruses and malware.
Most antivirus software vendors publish extensive test programs in PDF format. The reports provide quick and easy ratings of performance, protection and usability for each suite along with detailed graphs and charts illustrating the results of specific test elements. The percentage of real-world malware and reference set exposures that the program blocks, neutralises or compromises, as well as the number of false positives detections of benign programs, are crucial figures to keep an eye out for.
Avast Free Antivirus had the highest scores for Windows virus detection in AV-Comparatives tests conducted in June 2023. It also had the highest rates of success in removing Mac malware. It also scored highly in the categories of passive, full-scan and quick-scan.
Of the paid-for programs, Bitdefender Total Security had the tiniest post-installation background system impact which was followed by Kaspersky Total Security and ESET Security Cloud Free. However it was the most slow in the full scan and quick-scan categories. The program’s relatively low impact on background may be due to the fact it doesn’t run as a default application on Windows 10 or 11, like the majority of its rivals.
Intego X10 had the lowest overall system impact on the background and full scan and yet managed to detect every single piece of malware that was tested. It’s a rare company that focuses solely on Macs and is an excellent addition to any security arsenal.
